The two land-based Pennsylvania casinos that originally went by the name SugarHouse–one in Pittsburgh and one in Philadelphia–underwent a name change in 2019. Both are now known as Rivers Casino.
Both casino properties, along with two other Rivers Casinos, one in Schenectady, NY and one in Des Plaines, IL (near Chicago), are owned and operated by Rush Street Gaming. Unlike the above-mentioned two Pennsylvania casinos, the Illinois and upstate New York casinos have had the name Rivers Casino from day 1. However, in 2019, Rush Street Gaming decided to rebrand the two SugarHouse Casinos in Pennsylvania and name them Rivers Casino, too. The rationale behind the rebranding is to create a single unified brand for all of the Rush Street Gaming offerings. The name Rivers also makes sense since all four land-based casinos are located along or overlooking a river.
As of this writing, the NJ online casino and sportsbook owned and operated by Rush Street Gaming is still called PlaySugarHouse, as is the Pennsylvania online casino and sportsbook affiliated with Rivers Casino Philadelphia. However, the Pennsylvania online casino and sportsbook affiliated with Rivers Casino Pittsburgh is fittingly called BetRivers.
This review is about the online partner of BetRivers Casino Pittsburgh: BetRivers Online Casino. However, don’t let the new name fool you. The generous bonuses and promotions, wide range of banking options, single wallet system for both casino play and sports betting, and iRush Rewards loyalty program are the same as for PlaySugarHouse.

The building sits above a few inches of water in a shallow pit. This was created for the casino to comply with state law, intended to legalize riverboat gambling.[1]
History[edit]
In 2008, the Illinois Gaming Board awarded the state's 10th and last casino license to Midwest Gaming and Entertainment LLC, a group led by Neil Bluhm,[1] to build a 140,000-square-foot (13,000 m2) casino on approximately 21 acres (8.5 ha) adjacent to the Tri-State Tollway at the northwest corner of Devon Avenue and Des Plaines River Road. Des Plaines was awarded the gaming license in 2008. The city approved zoning in early 2010. The casino opened in July 2011 as Rivers Casino.
In 2019, Churchill Downs Inc., which owned the nearby Arlington Park racetrack, purchased a 62 percent stake in the casino from Bluhm and his partners for $407 million.[2][3]
